After a long, stressful day, laying down in bed can help you feel at ease and relaxed. Pulling up the warm covers and fluffing your pillow just the way you like, bedtime is a peaceful time. Well, that is unless you have a partner sharing the bed that has annoying bedtime habits.
From snoring and pulling the covers to clipping toenails in bed and keeping the volume turned up as they watch videos on their phone, there are many aspects of partners’ sleeping habits that annoy Americans all across the country.
While you may be tempted to play online Solitaire in bed, remember even a silent game can keep your partner tossing and turning if you forget to dim your phone’s brightness. So with these irritants in mind, the team at Solitaire Bliss decided to learn where people are most annoyed by their partner at bedtime and which habits are causing the most strife among couples.
To do this, we surveyed residents of every state who are in a relationship to learn about their partners’ habits and their views of them. We then created an annoyance score on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 representing the most annoying. Read on to see if others in your state share your same grievances in the bedroom each night.
You can love your partner with all your heart, but still hate some of their habits when bedtime comes. From stealing all of the sheets and snoring to watching videos on high volume and fighting over the fan, partners can struggle over a variety of sleep habits each night.
Leading the way with the highest annoyance score is Nevada where a third of residents say they bicker with their partner about sleep time annoyances at least once a week. Next up is Ohio, where 1 in 3 residents say bedtime annoyances have put a strain on their relationship.
North Carolina is up next in third, followed by Maine and Minnesota in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Not all Americans find themselves dreading bedtime with their partner however, as residents of Wisconsin, Indiana, and Arkansas earned the lowest annoyances scores.
Overall, Tennessee and Missouri are the most likely to bicker at least once a week with their partner regarding their sleeping habits, and Minnesota and Mississippi are the most likely to feel a strain on their relationship due to these annoyances. Taking it a step further, Arizona and Delaware residents are the most likely to say they would have a separate bedroom from their partner if they could afford it.
After learning where Americans are most annoyed by their partners’ sleeping habits, we turned our attention to the specific causes of annoyance. Up first on our list is snoring as nearly 1 in 2 people say it irritates them. You can’t help it if you are a light sleeper who falls in love with a snorer, but it certainly seems these two people always seem to find each other.
Second on our list is pulling sheets. Nothing is worse than being fast asleep in the comfort of your bed, just for your partner to tug all the blankets off of you, leaving you exposed to the cold. Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence for more than two-fifths of Americans.
In third place, we discovered that hogging space and sprawling out across the bed is a habit 1 in 3 partners find annoying when their partner does it. Tossing and turning, setting multiple alarms or overusing snooze, and coming to bed late follow closely behind in fourth, fifth and sixth place respectively.
In general Gen Xers are most annoyed by their partner’s sleeping habits, and women are more likely than men to consider their partners’ habits irritating. These annoyances have caused arguments among many couples, and 1 in 5 people say they bicker with their partners at least once a week regarding their bedtime habits.
With so many sleeping habits causing strain on relationships across the country, we wanted to learn which habit plagues each state the most. Overall, the most common annoyance among states is clipping nails or grooming in bed, as six states consider it the worst, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, and West Virginia.
Up next is getting up to use the restroom frequently throughout the night, which ranks number one in five states, Illinois, Kentucky, Nevada, New York, and Virginia. For light sleepers, too much movement can make it difficult to stay asleep, and too little sleep can make anyone grumpy.
In third place, we have a six-way tie because some habits tied with three states apiece. This includes eating in bed, which is the most annoying habit according to Colorado, Louisiana, and Massachusetts residents. Insisting pets sleep in bed is up next, ranking first in New Hampshire, Tennessee, and Texas.
Noise from phones, tablets, and computers keep people up in Michigan, North Dakota, and Washington as they rank it the most annoying habit. While it may seem interesting or even funny to some, sleepwalking is an annoying habit partners in Georgia, Nebraska, and Oklahoma are tired of experiencing.
Waking up early may seem like a great way to start the day, but residents of Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Utah find it annoying when their partners do it. Wearing strong scents to bed wraps up our six-way tie as it annoys residents of Ohio, Rhode Island, and South Carolina the most.
While we at Solitaire Bliss enjoy playing a game of Spider Solitaire or FreeCell while lying in bed, we at least have the courtesy to turn down the brightness on our device. If you read through this article and realize you are guilty of some of these annoying habits, you can still take steps to better your partner’s experience each night.
If you are a thief of the sheets, maybe try adding an extra blanket to the bed to ensure there is enough to go around. If your flatulence is keeping your partner up each night, maybe try taking some antacids before lying down. If you’re guilty of playing noisy games, try a quiet game of Mahjong Solitaire or Golf Solitaire and save the loud games for earlier in the day.
From December 2 to 3, 2024, we surveyed 2,340 Americans who live and sleep with their partners, asking about the potentially annoying sleep habits their partners exhibit. Respondents were 51% female, 47% male, and 2% non-binary. Gen Z represented 15%, millennials 47%, Gen X 28% and baby boomers 10%. Forty-three states are represented in the data and rankings of states with the most annoying sleep habits are based on partners' reports of how annoying their bedmates are on a scale of 1 to 10, averaged.
